Box Score CHICAGO – The University of Chicago women's basketball team shook off a rough shooting day and stormed back in the fourth quarter to beat Augsburg University 60-55 on Saturday afternoon.
The Maroons improved to 2-0 on the young season. The Auggies dropped to 0-2.
An action-filled first quarter saw UChicago take a 20-17 lead after 10 minutes. Senior Klaire Steffens made a layup and hit a three-pointer in the final 90 seconds of the period to complete a 6-0 run.
The second quarter was a low-scoring affair as the two sides combined to shoot 24 percent from the field. By halftime, the game was tied at 26-26.
The second half belonged to UChicago guard Peyton Van Soest. The junior was red hot from long range, hitting all six of her three-point attempts and 7 of 8 field goals overall. Van Soest scored nine of her team's 13 points in the third quarter and then put up 11 more in the fourth.
Augsburg took its largest lead of the game at 40-28 midway through the third quarter. But three treys by Van Soest got the home team back into it at 42-37. Junior Mallory Brodnik scored in close in the final seconds of the period to reduce the deficit to three points.
UChicago scored on four-consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter to draw ahead 55-49. Then a dagger three from Van Soest pushed the advantage to nine. Augsburg could not recover from the salvo and the Maroons salted the game away from there.
Van Soest hit six three-pointers for the second-straight game en route to a team-high 20 points. Steffens secured a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Brodnik put up 11 points and six rebounds while junior Grace Hynes collected 11 rebounds. Sophomore Ellie Gross dished out five assists and scored six points off the bench.
For the game, UChicago shot 37.7 percent from the field, 35 percent from beyond the arc (7-20) and 59.1 percent at the free throw stripe (13-22). The Maroons outrebounded the Auggies 39-36. Augsburg shot 34.5 percent on field goals, 37.5 percent on threes (6-16) and 81.8 percent on free throws (9-11).
