Box Score CLEVELAND – The University of Chicago women's soccer team fought to a 2-1 victory over Case Western Reserve University in the third round of the 2021 NCAA Division III Championship on Saturday.
The No. 16-ranked women improve to an overall record of 15-2-4 on the season. This is the sixth time in program history that UChicago has made the quarterfinals.
CWRU fought to take the lead in the 33rd minute, leading the Maroons 1-0 at the half. Two minutes into second-half play, senior Nicole Kaspi recovered a rebound from first-year defender Mollie Kessler's shot to tie the score.
With less than three minutes left in regulation, senior Adriana Shutler scored for the Maroons off a free kick, giving UChicago the win.
UChicago was tough on CWRU's net, outshooting the Spartans 15-7, with 13 of those shots in the second half. Corner kicks were also in the visitors' favor at 5-1. Senior goalkeeper Miranda Malone (14-2-4 record) earned the win with two saves and one goal allowed.
The Maroons are returning to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2017, when UChicago finished as the national runner-up.
