Box Score MADISON, Wis. – The University of Chicago men's basketball team clawed its way back from a 15-point deficit in the second half, but a last-second shot came up just short in an 82-79 loss at Edgewood College on Saturday.
The Maroons dropped to 4-4 while the Eagles improved to 2-5.
Edgewood was efficient throughout the first half, shooting 61 percent on field goals while UChicago struggled at 34 percent. Eli Hartjes was a particular thorn in the side of the Maroons as the Eagles' forward scored 18 points in the opening 20 minutes. Sophomore Elliot Paschal put up 12 points of his own for the visitors, who trailed 36-32 at halftime.
A 13-0 run over a four-minute stretch staked Edgewood to a 51-36 advantage. The Maroon proceeded to score on their next five possessions to trim the deficit to 54-47. Senior Brandon Beckman got things going with an and-one layup.
Two layups in-a-row by junior Bryce Hopkins were soon followed up by five-straight free throw conversions by Paschal to draw within 70-66. Paschal then sank a three-pointer to make it 76-73 with 1:27 remaining.
In the game's final seconds, Edgewood held an 80-76 lead before fouling Hopkins. The junior forward grabbed his own rebound off a free throw miss, drew a foul and scored with five seconds left. He completed the three-point play with his subsequent free throw to trim the deficit to one point.
The Eagles made both their free throws on the other end to inch ahead at 82-79, and a pull-up trey attempt by UChicago drew iron at the buzzer.
Paschal scored a career-high 28 points, which featured a 14-for-15 performance at the free throw line. Hopkins finished with 13 points and six rebounds. Senior Ryan Martin tallied 11 points. Beckman compiled nine points, five assists, three steals and three rebounds.
UChicago shot 41.3 percent from the field, 20.8 percent from three (5-24) and 71 percent from the line (22-31). Edgewood shot 58.5 percent on field goals, 50 percent on three-pointers (3-6) and 65.4 percent on free throws (17-26).
The Eagles led the rebounding battle 38-32 but committed more turnovers (15-9). Hartjes finished with 30 points.
