Maroon Baseball Defeats Ripon Twice, 12-5 and 5-3

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RIPON, Wis. – The University of Chicago baseball team won all four games of its weekend series with Ripon College, finishing off Sunday afternoon with road wins of 12-5 and 5-3.

The Maroons improved to 9-6 overall and 4-2 in the Midwest Conference North Division. The Red Hawks fell to 6-19 (2-10 MWC).

Game One – UChicago 12, Ripon 5

One day after piling up 31 total hits against Ripon pitching, the UChicago bats were at it again in Sunday's opener. The visitors pounded out 17 hits and scored in six different innings. By the middle of the third, the Maroons were staked to a 6-0 lead.

Sophomore Blane Soper provided the opening salvo in the top of the first with a groundout that scored two runs. Wild pitches in the second and third innings made it 4-0. Soper singled in one more and junior Carson Weekley brought in another on a sacrifice fly.

Ripon got two runs back in the bottom of the third. But UChicago made sure a rally was not in the making. Weekley boomed a three-run homer in the fifth to make it 9-2. A fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly by first-years Dominic Angellotti and Truman Pierson, respectively, stretched the lead to 11-2 in the sixth. Soper closed out the Maroon scoring in the seventh with a solo bomb over the fence.

The Red Hawks added three runs in the final three innings to account for the final score.

Weekley (3-for-5) and Soper (2-for-5) collected four RBI apiece. Pierson, junior Brett Riegler and first-year Max Chou all collected three hits. Fifth-year senior Payton Jancsy was 2-for-4 with two hit-by-pitches.

On the mound, sophomore Michael Allegri (1-1 record) got the win in five innings pitched. His line included one earned run, four hits, two walks and three strikeouts. First-year Phil Hogan went three innings in relief (1 R, 3 K), followed by senior Scott Rothschild (1 IP, 2 R).

Game Two – UChicago 5, Ripon 3

Game two saw senior David Clarke make his first collegiate start on the mound. The righthanded pitcher is UChicago's all-time saves leader with 14. After 28 relief appearances, Clarke was just as effective in the starter's role. He kept Ripon guessing over the course of five innings with a career-high eight strikeouts, while only allowing two hits and one walk.

Clarke departed the game with a 4-0 lead. The Maroons tallied one in the first and fourth innings and added two more in the fifth. RBI opportunities were converted on Riegler's single and sacrifice bunt, alongside triples from Angellotti and Chou. Senior Brian Lyle increased the advantage to 5-0 in the eighth on a single to left.

The Red Hawks made things interesting with three unearned runs in the eighth. First-year pitcher Dean Casey finished off the save opportunity in the ninth to preserve the win.

The Maroons totaled nine hits while committing two errors. Chou and Angellotti both went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Clarke was the winning pitcher. Three other Maroons saw action on the rubber – sophomore Cole Silva (2 IP, 1 K), fifth-year senior Grant Stone (1 IP) and Casey (1 IP).
