Box Score 2 CHICAGO – The University of Chicago baseball team closed out its 2021 season with a pair of losses to Beloit College on Sunday, 7-4 and 11-6.
The Maroons finished with a 19-10 overall record, including 14-6 in the Midwest Conference North Division.
Between games on the field, UChicago celebrated Senior Day for the team's eight seniors and two graduate students. Over the past four seasons, the Maroons compiled a record of 74-36 (.673 winning percentage).
Game One – Beloit 7, UChicago 4
First-year Truman Pierson got the home team off to a fast start with a double down the right field line. Senior Brian Lyle brought him home with a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 1-0.
Beloit loaded the bases in the third, fourth and fifth innings and came away with five runs total. An error led to a pair of unearned runs as well in the top of the seventh to stake the visitors to a 7-1 advantage.
The Maroons injected some eighth-inning drama by scoring three times. Sophomore Blane Soper doubled to lead things off, then scored on first-year Dominick Angellotti's RBI single. First-year Noah Nelson knocked in two more on a single to left center.
UChicago would put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, but Beloit secured the third out to end it.
The final box score featured eight hits and two errors for the hosts. Pierson batted 2-for-5 at the plate.
Sophomore starting pitcher Tyler Sarkisian (2-2 record) took the loss in four innings of work (4 ER, 5 BB, 4 K). Sophomore Michael Allegri tossed the final five innings – he struck out five with two unearned runs, three hits and two walks.
Game Two – Beloit 11, UChicago 6
Fifth-year senior Payton Jancsy got things rolling in game two. After being hit by a pitch, he stole second base to extend his school record total to 31 this season. Jancsy soon scored on a wild pitch.
The Bucs put up one in the third inning and two in the fourth inning to go up 3-1. UChicago responded in the bottom of the frame when junior Cristian Rodriguez blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence to tie the game.
However, Beloit was able to push across five runs on only two hits in the top of the fifth. The Maroons were playing catch-up from that point on. Jancsy delivered an RBI triple to the right field corner in the bottom of the seventh, then came in on Lyle's RBI groundout.
Down to their final outs in the ninth, Jancsy and Lyle both singled to put runners on the corners. Junior Carson Weekley's RBI groundout produced the sixth UChicago run of the contest before the Bucs retired the final batter.
Five defensive errors led to four unearned runs for the Maroons. Sophomore pitcher Dylan White got the start and went four innings (2 ER, 5 BB, 2 K). Sophomore Hayden Brotz absorbed the loss with 0.1 innings of relief (4 ER). Sophomore Matthew Guyton hurled 1.2 innings and first-year Dean Casey was on the mound for two innings (1 R). The senior trio of Zach Morochnik, Scott Rothschild and Grant Stone got one out each in the ninth inning.
Jancsy accounted for three of the team's 11 hits. Lyle and Rodriguez both went 2-for-5 in the batter's box.
