Maroon Baseball Splits at Lawrence

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

APPLETON, Wis. – The University of Chicago baseball team bashed its way to a win in game one, but a rally in game two was thwarted by the weather in a doubleheader split at Lawrence University on Sunday afternoon.

The Maroons ran their record to 12-7 overall (7-3 in the Midwest Conference). The Vikings moved to 12-14 overall and 5-11 in the MWC North Division.

Game One – UChicago 12, Lawrence 2

UChicago got off on the right foot on the very first batter of the day. First-year Truman Pierson led off the game with a solo homer to left field. Then in the third inning, Pierson walked and then scored on senior Brian Lyle's double to left field.

A fielding error allowed Lawrence to get on the board in the bottom half of the third. But UChicago put up two more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. Junior Carson Weekley knocked in one with a single, stole third base and reached home plate on a subsequent throwing error by the catcher. The next inning, fifth-year senior Payton Jancsy cracked a triple to right field and came all the way around to score thanks to a throwing error from the outfield.

After Lawrence made it 5-2 with an unearned run in the fifth, the status quo held until the eighth. That's when UChicago opened the flood gates, tallying three runs in the eighth and four in the ninth to put the game out of reach. Weekley and first-year Dominick Angellotti knocked back-to-back doubles that plated three total runners. Sophomore Blane Soper smacked an RBI double to left field, and three more runs came in thanks to a passed ball and fielding error.

The Maroons concluded with 13 hits and three errors. Jancsy went 3-for-5 with a stolen base, and Weekley batted 2-for-3 with two RBI, two walks and two stolen bases. Pierson and first-year Max Chou collected two hits apiece.

On the mound, sophomore Michael Allegri pitched a career-high eight innings, striking out seven. He only allowed five hits and two unearned runs to improve his season record to 2-1. Sophomore Matthew Guyton tossed one inning of relief, with one walk and one strikeout.

Game Two – Lawrence 7, UChicago 5   (6 innings)

Lyle's RBI groundout in the top of the first gave UChicago an early advantage. Lawrence struck back by scoring once in each of the first four innings.

The Maroons pushed three runs across in the third, courtesy of Jancsy's RBI groundout and RBI singles by Lyle and Soper. The visitors then drew ahead 5-4 in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by first-year Jay Sivadas. The Vikings retook the lead 7-5 in the bottom half of the frame.

Once again, UChicago held its own by tying the game up 7-7 in the top of the seventh. However, a series of rain and lightning delays eventually ended the game, which reverted back to the last full inning to give Lawrence the win.

Jancsy went 2-for-3 with two more steals. He has now successfully swiped 21 bases on 22 attempts this year. UChicago totaled six hits in the contest.

Senior David Clarke threw the opening four innings, striking out five with four runs allowed. Fifth-year senior Grant Stone (0-1 record) took the loss with three runs and three strikeouts across 1.1 innings. Sophomore Hayden Brotz fanned one in 0.2 innings as well.
