Box Score 2 CHICAGO – The University of Chicago baseball team benefited from stellar performances by its starting pitchers as the hosts silenced St. Norbert's bats en route to 5-2 and 6-2 victories on Saturday afternoon.
The Maroons improved to 16-7 overall and 11-3 in the Midwest Conference North Division. The Green Knights dropped to 17-14 (11-9 MWC North).
Game One – UChicago 5, St. Norbert 2
Tyler Sarkisian was on the mound to start the day, and the sophomore righty mowed through SNC for the opening five innings. He only allowed one hit and one walk in that time frame. Meanwhile, UChicago staked him to a 3-0 lead. Fifth-year senior Payton Jancsy singled to right for an RBI in the third inning, an error plated one in the fourth, and junior Carson Weekley drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth.
The Green Knights made inroads in the sixth. A pair of two-out singles brought in a pair of unearned runs. Sarkisian then induced a lineout to center to end the inning.
Junior Brett Riegler absorbed a hit-by-pitch to force in a run in the bottom of the seventh. Then Weekley added a sacrifice fly to push it to 5-2.
Sophomore Cole Silva entered in relief for the final two innings. He struck our four and earned the save. Sarkisian got the win to improve to 2-1 on the season. His pitching line featured seven strikeouts over seven innings, along with four hits and three walks.
UChicago totaled 10 hits and two errors. Jancsy went 3-for-5 at the plate with one RBI and swiped three bases. Riegler and sophomore Blane Soper both added two hits.
Game Two – UChicago 6, St. Norbert 2
The story of game two was Dylan White. The sophomore righthander was firing strikes from the get-go and – with one inning excepted – turned in a pristine outing. White tossed his first collegiate complete game and only needed 105 pitches to do it. He pumped in 80 strikes to make quick work of St. Norbert's lineup. The game lasted a tidy 1 hour, 47 minutes.
The Maroons got off on the right foot by scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning. A wild pitch scored first-year Truman Pierson. Then Riegler laid down a bunt single to plate the runner from third base. Weekley made it 3-0 with an RBI grounder.
White hit turbulence in the top of the third, with three hits and two runs allowed. But that would be all that the visitors would be able to scrounge. The sophomore power pitcher only allowed two hits in his other eight innings, while walking one and striking out eight. The win moved his season record to 3-1.
Some insurance runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the seventh. A passed ball made it 4-2, then Pierson lashed an RBI triple to the right field corner. He ended up scoring on a wild pitch.
The Maroons concluded with eight hits and one error. Pierson and Riegler were both 2-for-4 with an RBI each.
