Box Score 2 DE PERE, Wis. – The University of Chicago baseball team kept St. Norbert College at bay when it counted on Sunday afternoon to secure a pair of road wins, 7-2 and 7-6.
The Maroons (18-7 overall, 13-3 Midwest Conference) have now won 13 of their past 14 games. The Green Knights dropped to 17-16 (11-11 MWC).
Game One – UChicago 7, St. Norbert 2
The first at-bat of the day put UChicago ahead as first-year Truman Pierson blasted a solo home run. Then in the top of the fourth, junior Brett Riegler doubled and scored on an RBI single from first-year Dominick Angellotti.
Four-straight hits plated three in the sixth inning, highlighted by junior Carson Weekley's two-run double and Angellotti's RBI single to make it 5-0. St. Norbert got two back on a double in the bottom half of the frame.
The Maroons added some seventh-inning insurance. First-year Noah Nelson led off with a single, then stole second and third base. He came in to score easily on a double from Pierson. Senior Brian Lyle lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to account for the final 7-2 margin.
Sophomore pitcher Michael Allegri (3-1 record) got the win with six innings of work. He allowed two runs on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Sophomore Hayden Brotz was lights out in relief to earn a three-inning save. He kept SNC off the scoreboard, striking out four with two hits allowed.
Offensively, the Maroons collected 14 hits with five multi-hit performances. Riegler went 3-for-4 and produced a pair of doubles. Weekley and Angellotti were both 2-for-4 with two RBI. Pierson was 2-for-5 with two runs driven in and Nelson batted 2-for-4.
Game Two – UChicago 7, St. Norbert 6
The second game of the day was a see-saw of momentum switches. The Green Knights grabbed a 2-0 lead early that held until the top of the fourth, when the Maroons countered with four runs of their own. In a pair of bases-loaded situations, Riegler singled and Nelson doubled for two RBI in each case.
St. Norbert got within 4-3 after five innings. An unearned run came around to score on first-year Max Chou's single in the top of the sixth. Nelson's subsequent sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 6-3.
Riegler's RBI double in the seventh proved critical, as SNC clawed to within 7-6 in the bottom half of the inning. The bottom of the ninth inning provided more potential drama as a two-out error put the tying run on second base. However, first-year pitcher Drew Byran slammed the door with a strikeout to end the game.
After leaving 10 runners on base in game one, the Green Knights stranded a whopping 18 runners in game two. Sophomore pitcher Matthew Guyton worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the third by retiring three in-a-row. Fifth-year senior Grant Stone registered a strikeout with the bases filled to end the seventh inning as well.
UChicago finished with 10 hits offensively and three errors defensively. Riegler (three RBI), Lyle and fifth-year senior Payton Jancsy all went 2-for-5 in the batter's box. Nelson drove in three runs.
Six UChicago pitchers saw action in game two. Senior David Clarke (2 R, 2K) went two innings as the starter, while Guyton (2 R, 5 K) got the victory in three innings pitched. They were followed in order by first-year Dean Casey (1.1 IP, 2 R, 2 K), Stone (0.2 IP, 2 K) and first-year Phil Hogan (1 IP, 1 K). Bryan picked up his second save of the year in the ninth.
