Box Score CHICAGO – In its home opener on the Stagg Field grass, the University of Chicago women's soccer team deployed a shutdown defense and a tenacious offense to beat Kalamazoo College 3-0 on Saturday.
The No. 15-ranked Maroons improved to 4-0. The Hornets fell to 4-1.
UChicago only allowed one shot defensively in the game while firing off 22 on the offensive end. The Maroons have strung together four-straight shutouts to start the season while outshooting the opposition by a total of 108-7.
Senior Nicole Kaspi put the home team on the scoreboard 22 minutes into the match. She tallied her third goal of the season off an assist by first-year Mollie Kessler. While the Maroons fired off 11 shots in the opening half, the advantage remained at 1-0 heading into the break.
In the second half, UChicago came out with purpose, firing off a pair of shots and forcing corner kicks in the early minutes. Then in the 51st minute, senior Peyton Jefferson set up a score by first-year Josie Majowka to make it 2-0. Jefferson added some insurance of her own nine minutes later – she scored her third goal of the year from 15 yards out. The assist came from sophomore Alai Araujo-Elorza.
UChicago's consistent aggression led to 13 corner kicks on the afternoon. Kalamazoo produced three corners.
Senior goalkeeper Miranda Malone (4-0 record) saved the only shot on goal for the Hornets in 90 minutes of action.
Offensively, the Maroons have already totaled 28 goals this season.
The shot chart featured four shots by junior Annie Mitchell and three shots from Kaspi and Araujo-Elorza.
