UChicago Women's Basketball Falls to Rochester 73-60

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The University of Chicago women's basketball team fell behind early and the University of Rochester kept the visitors at bay in the second half to defeat the Maroons 73-60 on Friday night.

The Maroons dropped to 7-5 on the season and 0-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings. The Yellowjackets improved to 10-3 (2-0 UAA).

UChicago's Mallory Brodnik made a jumper to pull her team to within 7-6 in the early going. But the Yellowjackets caught fire from that point on, going on a 21-1 run over the next eight minutes of game time. Junior Ashley Gao's driving layup broke up the run in the second quarter, as she scored six points in-a-row for the Maroons.

Sophomore Marissa Powe sank a pull-up jumper with three seconds left in the first half to draw UChicago closer at 33-21. She snagged three steals through two quarters while adding six points. The Maroons took 10 more shots than the Yellowjackets in the half, but only converted 25.7 percent of their attempts.

In the third quarter, UChicago drew back to within single digits on several occasions. Junior Grace Hynes had the hot hand, making all four of her shots and scoring her team's final six points of the quarter. However, Rochester's offense kept pace and took a 52-39 lead into the fourth.

The Maroons kept chipping away as the final minutes ticked down. They closed to within 65-57 with 1:27 left in regulation. But Rochester sank its final eight free throws to clinch the win.

Hynes put up a team-best 12 points. Senior Klaire Steffens submitted her sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Ellie Gross contributed 11 points as well.

The Maroons shot 34.3 percent from the field, 22.2 percent from three-point land (4-18) and 61.5 percent from the charity stripe (8-13). The Yellowjackets made 44.2 percent of their field goals, 50 percent of their three-pointers (4-8) and 85.2 percent of their free throws (23-27).

Rochester dominated the boards by a 47-32 margin. UChicago countered by forcing 20 turnovers, with a 21-14 edge in the points off turnovers category.
