CHICAGO – In its first dual match of the season, the University of Chicago men's tennis team defeated North Central College 7-2 on Saturday.
The Maroons improved to 1-0 and the Cardinals fell to 0-1.
With doubles play opening the day, the Maroons grabbed two of the three matches at No. 1 and No. 3. Juniors Biren Reddy and Bailey Forgus won 8-3 while seniors Alex Guzhva and Shramay Dhawan triumphed 8-4.
Singles play saw UChicago take five of the six matches at spots two through six. Guzhva (No. 2 singles) and Dhawan (No. 3 singles) produced the most dominant score lines with wins of 6-2, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-1, respectively. First-year Jacob Lowen and Reddy were victorious at No. 4 and 5 in straight sets. Forgus came up clutch to take No. 6 singles in a third-set super tiebreaker.
"It was really good to be back on the courts and competing again," Head Coach Jay Tee said. "The men did a great job of playing through some rust and focused on working through adversity. We were also able to get some different guys match experience that will pay off later in the season and in their careers."
