CHICAGO – The University of Chicago women's soccer team fell victim to an early goal on Sunday afternoon, as the Maroons lost 1-0 to Case Western Reserve University at home.

UChicago owns an overall record of 7-6-1 (0-3-1 in UAA play). The No. 6-ranked Spartans – the Maroons' highest-ranked opponent to date – moved to 12-0 on the season and 4-0 in conference action.

A Case Western Reserve player broke free in the 17th minute and sent the ball just under the crossbar for what would ultimately be the winning goal. Outside of that hiccup, however, the Maroon defense played well enough to keep a high-caliber opponent within reach. The Spartans were only able to get off five total shots and two corner kicks. Sophomore goalie Sophie Pilarski came up with saves on three other shots on goal.

Though they came close at times, UChicago was unable to break through offensively. The Maroons maintained possession and pushed hard for the equalizer in the second half. While the home team attempted four corner kicks and 15 shots, only two of those were on goal. However, two additional shots clanged agonizingly off the crossbar. The first came off the foot of sophomore Stella El-Fishawy in the 13th minute, and the second off junior Maggie Jameson's late-game attempt in the 77th minute. Senior Hannah Rittenhouse led the team with five shots, with El-Fishawy and sophomore Livia Sabloff contributing a shot on goal each.
