CHICAGO – In Saturday's season opener, the University of Chicago swimming & diving teams won a combined 59 events in split-squad duals versus Illinois Institute of Technology and Wheaton College.
The Maroons entered the 2022-23 season with the women ranked No. 5 and the men ranked No. 6 in the nation. Their home debut against Illinois Tech featured 29 wins in 32 events.
Three men were multi-event individual winners. Jesse Ssengonzi was the victor in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle, Arthur Kiselnikov was the winner in both the 200-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle, and Joe Zhang grabbed first place in the 200-yard IM and 200-yard breaststroke. The women had five individuals with two wins apiece. Addie Diaz swept the 100-yard and 200-yard backstrokes, Ioanna Georgopoulou was victorious in the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly, Filippa Kolokotsa claimed the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard IM, Julia Luo was first in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard butterfly, and Veronica Fong grabbed the wins in the one-meter and three-meter dives. Her three-meter score of 275.79 was an NCAA provisional qualifying score.
Additional NCAA provisional qualifying scores came courtesy of Logan Sherwin in the one-meter dive (279.60) and Spencer Dearman in the three-meter dive (303.60).
At Wheaton, UChicago was similarly dominant with 30 victories out of 32 events. The Maroon men had four double winners on the day – Garrett Clasen in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle, John Paul Phillips in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstrokes, Junichiro Asano in the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly, and Marcell Milo-Sidlo in the 200-yard IM and 500-yard freestyle.
UChicago's women produced a three-time winner with Annabel Olivo in the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM and 200-yard backstroke. Samantha Bertschi touched the wall first in both the 100-yard freestyle and 1,000-yard freestyle. Alicia Soosai swept the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststrokes.
