Box Score CHICAGO – The 2022 football season concluded on Saturday as Lake Forest College defeated University Chicago 13-7 at Stagg Field.
The Maroons finished with a 7-3 overall record, with a 6-3 in-conference mark. The Foresters own a 9-1 record, going 8-1 in the Midwest Conference.
The season finale marked the arrival of one of the first winter days in Hyde Park, as overcast skies, below 40-degree temperature, and a smattering of snow flurries made for a rugged, low-scoring affair.
Both teams were wise to restrict the action mostly to the ground game, turning in modest but effective numbers under the circumstances and considering both teams' strong defenses. UChicago averaged 3.7 yards per rush for 153 rushing yards, while totaling 87 yards through the air. The Maroons' lone score of the day came courtesy of senior running back Jake Low on a one-yard goal line rush late in the game. The Virginia Beach native bolstered the team's rushing statistics with 6.1 yards per carry for 109 yards, headlined by a 40-yard scamper during which he broke several tackles.
The UChicago defense more than held their own, finishing with six tackles for loss and 13 points allowed. Lake Forest gashed a 60-yard touchdown run on its first offensive play but was held mostly in check the rest of the day. The Foresters were limited to 177 yards from that point on, including 5 of 14 on third down.
The visitors went up 13-0 in the first five minutes of the second quarter to cap off a 14-play, 75-yard drive. Low's touchdown plunge with 6:20 left in the game halved the deficit. But the comeback bid fell short on the next UChicago possession as Lake Forest snagged an interception and then ran out the clock.
Senior quarterback Wesley Gow completed 11 of 18 passes for 87 yards and an interception. Sophomore wide receiver Jayden Lucian grabbed four catches for 50 yards.
The Maroon defense finished the season with 114 points allowed, which broke the previous school record of 118 points from the 2018 campaign. UChicago held opponents to 11.4 points per game this year.
Junior linebacker William Skowronski put up a game-high 15 tackles with one tackle for loss. Fellow junior linebacker Aidan Cappellino posted nine tackles and one tackle for loss as well. Five other Maroons racked up six tackles each.
