CHICAGO – The University of Chicago men's tennis team stretched its win streak to five in a 7-2 victory over NCAA Division II opponent Lewis University on Saturday afternoon.
The Maroons improved to 5-0 while the Flyers fell to 3-1.
The hosts took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. At No. 1, junior Christian Alshon and sophomore Derek Hsieh won 8-4. Sophomore Arjun Asokumar and first-year Andrei Leonov combined to earn an 8-5 victory at No. 2.
UChicago maintained its good form in singles, winning five out of six matches, including four in straight sets. Asokumar and Alshon only surrendered three games each in their victories at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. Leonov and senior Shramay Dhawan won by matching 6-3, 6-1 scores at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Hsieh rallied to win in three sets at No. 2 (2-6, 6-3, 6-2).
"We weren't as sharp to start the match as we were last weekend, but we showed some grit to fight through it and pull out some tough wins," Head Coach Jay Tee said. "Christian and Arjun have been playing and competing at a high level and are becoming the emotional leaders of the team. I think we're starting to see the difference our attitude and energy makes in our level of play and will only continue to get better in that area. All in all, it was a good team win against a much-improved Lewis squad."
