Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Chicago baseball team made its season debut on Friday morning on the road at Rhodes College. While the visitors got off to an early lead, several big scoring innings by the Lynx resulted in a 10-3 loss for the Maroons.
UChicago got off to a promising start in the top of the first inning. With two runners on, junior Blane Soper smacked a single through the right side to make it 1-0.
Then in the third inning, sophomore Truman Pierson threw down a bunt single and proceeded to steal second base. He advanced to third and then home on wild pitches. Senior Carson Weekley's RBI single later in the frame made the score 3-0.
Unfortunately, the Maroons fell victim to the big inning on two occasions. Rhodes scored four runs in the fourth inning to capture the lead, then padded it with six more in the bottom of the eighth.
Sophomore Drew Bryan got the start on the mound. He struck out seven batters in 3.1 innings pitched, while allowing two runs, two walks and three hits. First-year Kason Pelz took the loss in relief (0.2 IP, 2 R). Juniors Michael Allegri (3.1 IP, 3 ER) and Sam Boswell (0.2 IP) also made appearances.
UChicago totaled six hits and committed three errors. Soper went 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. Pierson was 2-for-4 at the plate.
