MAYFIELD, Ohio – In the finals of the 2022 ITA Division III Men's National Team Indoor Championship, the University of Chicago men's tennis team lost 5-1 to Case Western Reserve University on Sunday morning.
The No. 6-seeded Maroons moved to 7-1 on the season. The No. 1-seeded Spartans improved to 7-1.
After a back-and-forth fight in doubles, UChicago ultimately dropped all three matches. The match at No. 1 went to a tiebreaker, where CWRU prevailed 8-7 (4).
Junior Christian Alshon gave the Maroons a win at the No. 2 position with a comprehensive 6-0, 6-1 victory. The No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 matches went unfinished due to the Spartans clinching the victory with their fifth team point.
"We ran into a really hot team playing in front of a huge home crowd and they were better than us today," Head Coach Jay Tee said. "We had some looks to sneak out a point or two in doubles, but Case came up with the goods in the big moments. I thought we came out fighting hard in singles, but the margins are so small with a 3-0 deficit that it forced us to play perfectly on all six courts. None of the guys are happy with the result today, but we fought unbelievably hard these last three days and we have a lot to be proud of and to build on heading into the spring."
