UChicago Baseball Explodes For 40 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. – The University of Chicago baseball hitters could not be contained on Thursday afternoon as the Maroons went on an offensive tear that concluded with 40 runs scored in a pair of road wins at Knox College.

UChicago improved to 13-6 on the season and 9-1 in the Midwest Conference (MWC). The Prairie Fire dropped to 5-13 overall and 3-5 in MWC contests.

The Maroons scored a combined 43 runs against Knox the last time the two teams met on March 21, 2021.

Game One – UChicago 25, Knox 0   (7 innings)

The opening game of the day featured an unstoppable wave of hits from the visitors. UChicago racked up 25 runs on 24 hits and seven walks in only seven innings of play. It marked the most runs scored by a UChicago team since a 29-3 victory at Lawrence University on April 3, 2010.

The visiting side swung for the fences and collected 10 extra-base hits – seven doubles, two triples and a home run. The line score included five runs in the first inning, one in the second, seven in the third, eight in the fourth and four in the sixth.

The most productive at-bats of the contest included a three-run double by first-year Josh Peyton, a three-run triple by first-year Jackson Slipock and a three-run homer by senior Carson Weekley.

Seven different Maroons finished with multiple hits. Senior Brett Riegler was a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI. First-year Richard Lu was a force at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, three RBI and three walks.

Peyton (four RBI), Slipock (three RBI), sophomore Noah Nelson (two RBI) and sophomore Dominick Angellotti (two RBI) tallied three hits each. Sophomore Jonathan Zeevi batted 2-for-3 with two RBI.

First-year pitcher Edmund Hogan (2-0 record) threw six shutout innings to get the win. He allowed two hits and three walks while striking out five. Junior Cole Silva hurled one scoreless inning with one hit, one walk and three strikeouts.

Game Two – UChicago 15, Knox 13   (10 innings)

The Maroons needed every bit of their offensive prowess in the nightcap. The rollercoaster game saw UChicago leap ahead 7-1 in the fourth inning, only to see Knox roar back to snatch the lead 10-8 after six innings.

Three more runs were pushed across by the visitors in the seventh to recapture the advantage 11-10. Once again, the Prairie Fire found an answer with three of their own in the bottom of the eighth to go up 13-11.

Down to their final outs in the ninth, the Maroons delivered in the clutch. Angellotti drove in Nelson with an RBI double, and Peyton stroked an RBI single with two outs to knot the score up at 13-13.

The game went to extras, where UChicago scored twice via a fielder's choice and an Angellotti sacrifice fly in the 10th inning. Knox went down 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the inning to clinch the Maroon victory.

Out of their 17 total hits, the visitors produced seven extra-base hits with four doubles, two triples and a home run.

Sophomore Truman Pierson batted 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Peyton was similarly 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and two RBI. Angellotti went 2-for-2 with a double, a triple and three RBI. Nelson hit 2-for-4 with two RBI and two walks.

On the pitcher's mound, first-year Hayden Leiderman improved to 2-0 on the season with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. The game also featured pitching appearances from junior Matthew Guyton (4 IP, 5 R), sophomore Phil Hogan (1 IP, 3 ER) and first-year Ethan Docter (2.1 IP, 4 R, 5 K).
