ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Chicago men's and women's tennis teams maintained their hot run of play by defeating Denison University on Saturday by scores of 8-1 and 9-0, respectively.  

"Going into the day, I was concerned that we might have a little rust from not competing last weekend and that we weren't prepared to play outdoors against two nationally-ranked Denison teams, but the teams quickly eased my fears," Head Coach Jay Tee said. "The things that stand out with each team are the way they compete through adversity and play for each other, and those things carried us through the day. We'll need more of the same tomorrow for a tough road test at WashU."

Women – UChicago 9, Denison 0

The No. 1-ranked Maroons (14-1 record) won their 14th match in-a-row while the No. 30-ranked Big Red dropped to 10-6.

UChicago made quick work of their first two doubles matches. The No. 1 duo of first-years Sylwia Mikos and Shianna Guo blanked their opponents 8-0, while junior Claudia Ng and senior Eugenia Lee triumphed 8-3 at No. 2. The No. 3 pairing of senior Lauren Park and junior Perene Wang emerged with a victory in the tiebreak 8-7 (7-3).

Singles was a rapid affair, as the Maroons won all six bouts in straight sets. In four of the matches, Denison was limited to one game or fewer. Junior Claudia Ng earned the 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 3, while Guo (No. 2), first-year Miranda Yuan (No. 4) and first-year Chloe Isabella Tsang (No. 6) all won by matching 6-1, 6-0 scores. Mikos and Park also secured their second wins of the day.

Men – UChicago 8, Denison 1

The No. 2-ranked Maroons (13-1 record) stretched their winning streak to six. The No. 13-ranked Big Red fell to 18-3 on the season.

UChicago started the day with a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Junior Christian Alshon and sophomore Derek Hsieh prevailed 8-5 at No. 1, while junior Sachin Das and senior Alex Guzhva rolled 8-2 at No. 3.

The Maroons kicked it into high gear during singles and grabbed all six matches. Four the bouts were finished in straight sets with Alshon at No. 1, Hsieh at No. 2, Das at No. 3 and Guzhva at No. 4. Junior Marek Michulka and senior Shramay Dhawan earned three-set victories at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
