Box Score CHICAGO – In a Thursday night match-up at Guaranteed Rate Field, the University of Chicago baseball team topped Illinois Institute of Technology 8-7.
The Maroons improved to 17-8 and the Scarlet Hawks dropped to 6-21.
Playing at the home field of the Chicago White Sox, the early going featured plenty of scoring. UChicago put up three runs in the opening two innings. Sophomore Noah Nelson started things off by cranking an RBI double and senior Brett Riegler knocked an RBI single. Nelson provided another RBI single in the top of the second. However, Illinois Tech countered with a four-run bottom of the second to go up 5-3.
The extra-base hits kept coming in the middle innings for the Maroons. RBI doubles were produced by Riegler, first-year Josh Peyton and sophomore Truman Pierson to give UChicago a 6-5 lead through five innings.
After Illinois Tech tied things back up in the sixth, sophomore Takeo Prather recaptured the advantage with a two-out run-scoring single in the seventh. Nelson provided a sacrifice fly in the top of ninth inning to net an insurance run, which proved crucial when Illinois Tech led off the bottom of the ninth with a triple. The Scarlet Hawks scored the runner on a sacrifice fly. But junior pitcher Sam Boswell ended the game with a strikeout to secure the 8-7 win.
UChicago posted 11 hits in the game. Riegler (two RBI) and Peyton (one RBI) both batted 3-for-4 with two doubles each. Nelson went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
On the pitcher's mound, junior Matthew Guyton started the opening 4.1 innings (5 R, 4 K). Sophomore Phil Hogan (1-0 record) got the win with 3.1 innings pitched. He allowed one run with one hit, three walks and five strikeouts. First-year Jack McKay and Boswell both pitched in the ninth inning, with Boswell earning his second save of the season.
