Box Score WHEATON, Ill. – In a non-conference contest played under the lights, the University of Chicago baseball team lost to Wheaton College 11-5 on Tuesday night.
The Maroons moved to 18-11 on the season. The Thunder improved to 14-16.
Walks were the big story of the night. All told, the two teams combined to issue 28 total walks – 17 by Wheaton pitchers and 11 by UChicago pitchers. The byproduct of all those walks also happened to be runners left on base – 16 by the Maroons and 14 by the Thunder over the course of the evening.
Facing a 2-0 deficit after the first inning, the visitors got one back in the top of the second on sophomore Truman Pierson's RBI single to center field. UChicago got its second run of the game on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth.
Senior Brett Riegler doubled in the sixth and came around to score on sophomore Max Chou's RBI single to the opposite field. The team's final runs came through in the seventh inning. Sophomore Noah Nelson plated one on a fielder's choice and Riegler singled in another.
Wheaton consistently added to its total on the scoreboard with one in the fourth, two in the fifth, two in the sixth, one in the seventh and three in the eighth.
UChicago finished with five hits, one error and five stolen bases. Riegler batted 2-for-5 with an RBI. Pierson was 1-for-2 with one RBI and three walks in the leadoff spot. Senior Carson Weekley swiped two bags, giving him 18 on the season.
Sophomore Phil Hogan (1-1 record) got the start and worked 4.2 innings on the mound. He took the loss with five runs, four walks and four strikeouts. Four Maroons made relief appearances – first-year Kirk Waller (0.2 IP, 2 R); junior Sam Boswell (0.2 IP); first-year A.J. Horkan (1 IP, 1 R) and first-year Jack McKay (1 IP, 1 ER, 2 K).
