UChicago Baseball Tops Ripon 6-2 On the Road

Box Score

RIPON, Wis. – The University of Chicago baseball team picked up a crucial conference road win at Ripon College on Wednesday afternoon by a 6-2 final score.

The Maroons (19-11 overall) improved to 14-5 in Midwest Conference (MWC) games and now hold a half-game lead over Lawrence University (13-5 MWC) for the top spot in the league. The Red Hawks dropped to 14-15 overall and 9-8 in the MWC.

Dylan White continued his hot streak on the mound with his third-straight quality start. Eight days earlier, the junior pitcher locked up the Ripon hitters at J. Kyle Anderson Field, allowing just one run on three hits with nine strikeouts. On Wednesday, White picked up right where he left off with another strong effort. He went seven full innings, allowing only one earned run while striking out seven.

White got some early support from the Maroon bats. UChicago took a 4-0 lead by the middle of the second inning thanks to a trio of RBI sacrifice flies by senior Brett Riegler, sophomore Truman Pierson and sophomore Noah Nelson. First-year Josh Peyton added a bases-loaded RBI single as well.

Ripon put up one run in both the fourth and fifth innings to draw closer at 4-2. The hosts would later load the bases in both the seventh and eighth innings, but they emerged with nothing to show for it. White struck out the final two batters of the seventh to escape the jam. Then sophomore reliever Dean Casey also wriggled out of the sticky situation by inducing a groundout to end the eighth.

The Maroons added valuable insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings via a Ripon error and an RBI single by first-year Jack Goldstein. Junior pitcher Hayden Brotz entered the game in the ninth and sent Ripon down in order to preserve the victory.

UChicago accumulated eight hits, three errors and three stolen bases on the day. Goldstein went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk. Peyton batted 3-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Dominick Angellotti hit 2-for-4.

White improved his season record to 4-1 while Casey and Brotz tossed one inning each.
