Maroon Baseball Falls to North Central Rally, 14-11

Box Score

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The University of Chicago baseball team fell victim to a late rally by North Central College in a 14-11 loss on Thursday night.

The Maroons ran their record to 19-12 on the year. The No. 13-ranked Cardinals improved to 27-8.

Senior Carson Weekley got UChicago on the board in the top of the first inning, knocking an RBI single to left field. North Central countered with four runs in the bottom of the frame.

Zeros populated the scoreboard for the next three full innings. Then in the top of the fifth, the visitors reclaimed the lead 5-4. UChicago loaded the bases with two outs and Weekley delivered a two-run single to left. Sophomore Max Chou's follow-up hit filled the bags once again, setting up a two-run single up the middle by first-year Richard Lu.

The Maroons then made a big move with six runs in the sixth inning. Once again, they did their best work with two outs and the bases filled. Weekley stepped up to plate to the exact same scenario he saw the previous inning, and he replicated his previous effort with another two-run single. Lu worked an RBI walk to plate the runner from third base. Then sophomore Takeo Prather cracked a two-run single through the right side. An error brought in one more to make the score 11-4.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals answered back in kind. NCC put up three runs in the bottom of the sixth, five in the seventh and two in the eighth to erase the deficit and ultimately prevail 14-11.

UChicago ended up with 15 hits while committing two errors. Weekley led the way by going 3-for-6 with five RBI. Prather batted 3-for-5 with two RBI. Sophomore Noah Nelson and junior Blane Soper posted two hits each.

On the mound, the Maroon pitchers battled with bouts of wildness (six wild pitches, six hit-by-pitch, nine walks). Junior Matthew Guyton started the game and threw 5.1 innings with five earned runs and six strikeouts. Junior Cole Silva (0.2 IP) and first-year A.J. Horkan (1 IP, 2 R) made relief appearances. Junior Sam Boswell (1 IP, 5 R) took the loss on the evening.
