WEST BEND, Wis. – The University of Chicago men's tennis team stretched its winning streak to five with an 8-1 win over Gustavus Adolphus College on Sunday.
The No. 2-ranked Maroons improved to 12-1. The No. 19-ranked Gusties fell to 16-10.
For the seventh time this season, UChicago captured all three doubles points. The pairings of Christian Alshon/Derek Hsieh, Pat Otero/Andrei Leonov and Jacob Lowen/Alex Guzhva each won by 8-5 final scores.
The Maroons then kept the momentum rolling into singles, where they took five out of six matches. Alshon only surrendered one game in his 6-1, 6-0 rout at No. 1. Hsieh (6-4, 6-3) and Marek Michulka (6-2, 6-2) earned straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively. Leonov (No. 4) and Lowen (No. 6) prevailed in third-set super tiebreakers.
"For the second day in-a-row, the guys stepped up and competed extremely well against a team that has given us fits in the past," Head Coach Jay Tee said. "Doubles were sharp and focused, and singles were more of the same. We'll spend the next week getting healthy before we head south on I-55 for a couple tough matches in St. Louis."
