Box Score CHICAGO – The University of Chicago baseball team grabbed a quick lead and kept Monmouth College's bats silent throughout Wednesday's 10-0 victory at J. Kyle Anderson Field.
The Maroons improved to 20-12 overall and 15-5 in Midwest Conference play. The Fighting Scots fell to 14-23 overall (8-16 MWC).
Making his second-straight start on the mound, first-year pitcher Ethan Docter submitted another scoreless outing. The rookie righthander's fastball-curveball combination kept Monmouth's hitters on the back foot. The visitors only managed two hits all afternoon as UChicago displayed superlative defense on the infield. Docter improved his season record to 3-0 with 5.2 innings of work. He struck out three and walked four.
Sophomore reliever Dean Casey entered the game with two runners on and two outs in the top of the sixth. He ended the frame by inducing a grounder to first base. Casey then closed out the seventh inning 1-2-3, ending the game on a strikeout. It marked UChicago's fourth shutout of the season.
The Maroons surged ahead with five runs in the bottom of the first inning on only one hit. The opening two batters were both plunked, and a walk loaded the bases. Senior Carson Weekley then worked an RBI walk to force in the first run. Junior Blane Soper followed up with a deep blast to right field that looked sure to be a sacrifice fly. But a misplay by the outfielder brought in two runs and put Soper on second base. Sophomore Dominick Angellotti then made it 5-0 with a two-run single to center.
Both offenses were silent for the next three innings. In the fifth, first-year Josh Peyton singled and stole second base. He was driven in by senior Brett Riegler's RBI double to the center field fence.
UChicago then blew the game wide open with a four-run sixth inning. First-year Jackson Slipock knocked an RBI single, and sophomore Truman Pierson lanced a two-run triple into the right field corner. Pierson then scored standing up on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 10-0. The game ended after seven innings via the 10-run rule.
UChicago collected eight hits and four stolen bases. Angellotti (two RBI) and Riegler (one RBI) both batted 2-for-3. Weekley's two stolen bases gave him 20 on the season.
