Box Score WALTHAM, Mass. – The University of Chicago women's basketball team jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and was in control the rest of the way for a 79-60 win at Brandeis University on Sunday afternoon.
The No. 13-ranked Maroons improved to 18-4 overall and 7-4 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Judges dropped to 6-16 overall (1-10 UAA).
A massive 16-2 run in the first quarter staked UChicago to a 19-6 lead that the visitors would not relinquish. Marissa Powe was a key driver of the offense, finishing the quarter with eight points.
Brandeis started to make gains in the second quarter to draw within four at 29-25. But Ellie Gross was able to counteract any potential comeback with 13 points in the period. By the time halftime rolled around, UChicago was firmly back in control at 47-34.
The lead never dipped below double digits in the second half as the Maroons cruised to the 19-point victory.
Gross had the hot hand offensive, scoring 22 points on 6 of 10 shooting from three-point range. The junior guard also added five rebounds. Powe submitted 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Bella Alfaro tallied 12 points off the bench and Grace Hynes added 10 points.
UChicago converted 40.7 percent from the field, 32.1 percent from beyond the arc (9-28) and 78.6 percent from the charity stripe (22-28). Brandeis shot 36.2 percent on field goals, 32.0 percent on three-pointers (8-25) and 90.9 percent on free throws (10-11).
The Maroons were +3 in rebounding (36-33), while the Judges committed 22 turnovers compared to 14 by UChicago.
