WESTFIELD, Ind. – In the opening game of the 2023 season, the University of Chicago baseball team lost Friday's contest to Case Western Reserve University by a 10-1 score.

A five-run fourth inning by the Spartans put the Maroons in a 6-0 hole. UChicago got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth with Jack Goldstein's two-out RBI double. But that was all the Maroons would get the rest of the way. CWRU went on to score three in the sixth and one in the seventh to account for the final score.

UChicago was limited to five hits while making three defensive errors. Noah Nelson batted 2-for-4 with a stolen base.

Starting pitcher Drew Bryan took the loss in 3.1 innings, striking out six while allowing six runs. Hayden Brotz tossed 3.1 innings of relief (3 ER, 3 K). Kirk Waller (1.1 IP) and A.J. Horkan (1 IP, 3 K) closed out the final frames.
