Box Score WESTFIELD, Ind. – The University of Chicago baseball team closed out its four-game series against Case Western Reserve University with a 5-3 extra-innings loss on Sunday.
The Maroons and the Spartans evened their season records at 2-2.
UChicago took a 2-1 lead after three innings of play. Matthew Wills slammed a run-scoring triple with two outs in the bottom of the second, and Devan Johnson knocked an RBI single in the bottom of the third.
CWRU drew ahead with two runs in the sixth, but the Maroons struck back in the eighth to tie it up on an RBI single from Wills. However, the Spartans plated two in the tenth inning to secure the victory.
At the game's conclusion, the UChicago box score included eight hits, two errors and four stolen bases. Wills (two RBI) and Jack Goldstein each batted 2-for-4. Braden Jirovec picked up a pair of steals.
Starting pitcher Michael Allegri hurled 5.1 innings, with two earned runs and two strikeouts. Matthew Guyton pitched 1.2 innings of relief, and A.J. Horkan closed out the final two outs in the tenth. Dean Casey (0-1 record) was saddled with the loss, going 2.1 innings with two runs and one strikeout.
