CHICAGO – The University of Chicago women's tennis team kicked off its 2023 campaign with a 9-0 shutout of NCAA Division II opponent Lewis University on Friday at XS Tennis.
The No. 2-ranked Maroons moved to 1-0 and the Flyers dropped to 0-1.
UChicago rolled through doubles with scores of 8-5, 8-3 and 8-3. Lewis was more competitive in singles play, but the Maroons captured both second-set tiebreakers that occurred. Five of the six matches were straight-set wins, and Sylwia Mikos prevailed in three sets at No. 1.
Multi-winners on the day included Mikos, Shianna Guo, Claudia Ng, Nicole Geller and Brooke Pedersen. Perene Wang was part of the winning duo at No. 2 doubles (8-3) and Miranda Yuan cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
"I couldn't have asked for a better first match for the women," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "Last year against Lewis, we started really slow, dropping a doubles match and four first sets. This year, we jumped out to big leads in every match and responded well when Lewis made runs at us. It's only the first match, but we looked a year older and a year more confident in ourselves."
