Box Score CHICAGO – Unearned runs proved costly as the University of Chicago baseball team lost 12-11 at North Park University on Tuesday afternoon.
The Maroons dropped to 6-6 while the Vikings moved to 4-12.
After falling behind 2-0 in the opening inning, UChicago got one back in the top of the second with Jack Goldstein's RBI single. By the middle of the fourth inning, the Maroons possessed an 8-3 lead. The visitors were buoyed by a seven-run top of the fourth. Jack Sharp forced in one with a bases-loaded walk, and Truman Pierson immediately followed with a grand slam. Erik Rindner closed out the scoring binge with a two-run homer.
Sharp knocked an RBI single the very next inning. But North Park pulled to within 9-8 after a pair of two-run homers in the bottom of the fifth.
Rindner smacked his second home run of the day in the top of the sixth – a solo shot to left center. Blane Soper then made the score 11-9 in the eighth with an RBI single.
However, three unearned runs came across in the bottom of the ninth as North Park walked off with the 12-11 victory.
All told, four Maroon errors led to seven unearned runs on the day. Six pitchers saw action on the day, with starting pitcher Michael Allegri going three innings. Hayden Brotz, Tyler Sarkisian, Phil Hogan, A.J. Horkan and Matthew Guyton (0-1 record) all made relief appearances.
UChicago's offense racked up 14 hits. Michael Gladden batted 3-for-4 with a walk. Soper and Goldstein both went 3-for-5, with Goldstein producing a pair of doubles. Rindner hit 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI.
