Box Score CHICAGO – A pitcher's duel ended in favor of the visitors on a cold Wednesday as the University of Chicago baseball team lost 1-0 to Beloit College.
The Maroons dropped to 6-7 and the Bucs moved to 9-5.
With temperatures in the 30s, batters had a hard time against the opposing pitching staffs, combining for only nine total hits while striking out 21 times.
Hayden Leiderman was dealing from the start – the UChicago sophomore pitcher used his deceptive delivery and arm slot to great effect all afternoon. Every time runners got on base, he dug deep and stymied the Bucs. The visiting side started the third inning with back-to-back singles. But Leiderman roared back with three-straight swinging strikeouts to squash the threat.
The Bucs then loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. Once again, Leiderman had the answer with a strikeout and a fielder's choice groundout to end it. The sophomore righty finished with nine strikeouts in five scoreless innings.
The lone run of the day came with two outs in the top of the seventh when Beloit hit a solo homer to right field.
UChicago's offense was limited to three hits on the day, but the Maroons were aggressive when they were on the base paths with three steals. In the bottom of the ninth, Braden Jirovec singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. But Beloit induced a flyout to end the game at 1-0.
Relief pitcher Phil Hogan (1-1 record) absorbed the loss with one run allowed in three innings while striking out two. Tyler Sarkisian tallied one strikeout in his scoreless inning of work as well.
