Box Score 2 BELOIT, Wis. – The University of Chicago baseball team went 1-1 in a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader at Beloit College.
The Maroons ran their record to 13-10 overall and 7-4 in the Midwest Conference.
Game One – Beloit 15, UChicago 5 (8 innings)
Jack Goldstein gave the visitors a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning by blasting a home run over the left field wall. It was the first of two homers for the shortstop, as he also rocked a solo shot to center field in the eighth inning.
Jack Sharp's RBI single to center in the fourth and a run-scoring error in the fifth accounted for UChicago's total scoring. Beloit was able to tally multiple runs in five different innings as the game ended via run rule in the eighth inning.
UChicago compiled seven hits and one error. Goldstein hit 2-for-3 with two homers, three RBI and one walk. Erik Rindner batted 2-for-4.
Starting pitcher John Butka (1-1) took the loss in five innings. Relief appearances were made by A.J. Horkan (1 IP), Kirk Waller (1 IP), Sam Boswell and Carter Kelsey.
Game Two – UChicago 11, Beloit 7
Goldstein's hot streak carried over to game two as well. In the top of the first, he cracked a two-run double to right center to give the Maroons a lead they would not relinquish.
Two more runs came in on Rindner's homer to left center in the top of the third. It marked his team-leading sixth home run of the year.
Beloit got two runs back in the bottom half of the third. But UChicago got more separation with a four-run fifth. Michael Gladden cracked a three-run homer to left field, and Richard Lu followed up with a solo shot of his own over the centerfield fence.
The Bucs put up four of their own in the sixth to keep within shouting distance. However, the Maroons made it 11-6 in the seventh inning thanks to a two-run single by Goldstein and an RBI single by Sharp.
UChicago's defense stood out with no errors committed and four double plays turned. The offense contributed 10 hits to the effort. Goldstein batted 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI. Gladden went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI. Sharp was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Brady Miller scored four times while drawing three walks.
Starting pitcher Michael Allegri (1-0) got the win, striking out six in five innings of work. Ethan Docter (0.1 IP), Horkan (2 IP, 3 K) and Phil Hogan (1 IP) all saw action on the mound.
