Box Score 2 MONMOUTH, Ill. – University of Chicago's baseball program earned its first Midwest Conference (MWC) series victory of 2023 on Sunday, splitting its two contests with Monmouth on the road.
The Maroons followed a 5-0 shutout win in the Saturday's opener with a 9-5 Sunday win over the Scots to secure two wins in the three-game set. UChicago fell late in the final game as Monmouth used three runs in the seventh to claim the 5-3 victory.
Game One
Dylan White kept Monmouth off the scoreboard for the first four innings, allowing the Maroons to get out in front 2-0. After a Scot run in the bottom of the fifth, UChicago responded with runs in the top of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, respectively.
Monmouth responded with four in the bottom of the seventh to tie it at 5-5 before the Maroons answered with four runs in the top of the ninth. Ethan Docter (1-0) earned the victory, finishing out the game with 1.2 scoreless innings.
Erik Rindner finished the day 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI, which included the go-ahead RBI double in the ninth. Jack Goldstein also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, which included a two-run home run in the ninth to put the Maroons up four. Phil Hogan pitched 2.1 innings in middle relief and struck out five.
Game Two
John Butka pitched 5.0 innings, scattering eight hits while giving up just one earned run. Offensively, Monmouth led 1-0 after one and 2-1 after three before the Maroons took the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth. The Scots pushed across three in the bottom of the seventh against Hayden Brotz (0-1) and were able to close out the win.
For UChicago, Michael Gladden and Goldstein both had two hits. Rindner and Goldstein accounted for the two Maroon RBI.
The Maroons continue their conference slate with a doubleheader at home versus Knox on Wednesday, April 5. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
