ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – University of Chicago's ninth-ranked men's tennis program was narrowly defeated by third-ranked WashU 5-4 in the semifinals of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Tennis Championship on Saturday.
The Maroons won 2-of-3 doubles matches, but were unable to clinch the match in singles, falling in 4-of-6 singles bouts. UChicago will face Emory in the third-place matchup on Sunday to round out its week at the UAA Championship.
Arjun Asokumar and Derek Hsieh got the Maroons off to a good start with an 8-5 win at the top singles spot. UChicago's third pairing of Pat Otero and Biren Reddy also secured a victory, winning 8-3.
In singles, Marek Michulka finished first at No. 6 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win in straight sets. After two victories to completion from WashU, Sachin Das kept the Maroons out in front 4-3 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory. WashU's final two singles players at Nos. 1 and 4 claimed wins to complete the result.
UChicago's matchup with Emory, which will be key for possible NCAA Championships seeding and qualification, will be at 8:30 a.m. ET.
