Box Score 2 MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The University of Chicago baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader at Cornell College, winning 4-2 and losing 14-10.
The Maroons moved to 16-14 on the season and 10-8 in the Midwest Conference (MWC). The Rams ran their record to 18-13 (9-8 MWC).
Game One – UChicago 4, Cornell 2
Hayden Leiderman was the story in the opener. The sophomore starting pitcher threw all nine innings to earn the complete game victory. Now 4-0 on the season, Leiderman struck out nine batters with one earned run, five hits and one walk.
Josh Peyton led off the game with a single, stole second base and scored on Jack Goldstein's RBI single to left. The remaining three runs came in during the top of the third. Goldstein knocked an RBI double to right center and Blane Soper followed up with a two-run single.
UChicago finished with five hits and three errors. Goldstein batted 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Game Two – Cornell 14, UChicago 10
Defense bit the Maroons in game two, as the visitors committed eight errors in the contest. Those miscues led to eight unearned runs.
The back-and-forth game saw the Rams take a 7-3 lead, but UChicago tied it back up at 7-7 in the top of the fifth. After another tie at 10-10, Cornell scored the last four runs between the seventh and eighth innings to get the win.
On offense, the Maroons posted 12 hits. Richard Lu went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Brady Miller was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a walk. Jonathan Zeevi hit 2-for-4.
John Butka pitched the opening 4.2 innings before being relieved by Kason Pelz, Tyler Sarkisian (2-3 record) and Phil Hogan.
