Box Score CHICAGO – University of Chicago's baseball program notched a 5-3 victory over the Illinois Institute of Technology on Tuesday evening at the home of the Chicago White Sox in non-conference play.
In the annual battle of South Side Division III competitors, the Maroons scored five runs in the first three innings and held off the Scarlet Hawks the rest of the way. Blane Soper led the offensive effort, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Richard Lu delivered the go-ahead hit in the second with a two-run single and added a highlight-reel outfield assist to end Illinois Tech's rally in the eighth.
Jack Sharp and Jackson Slipock each had an RBI for UChicago in support. Edmund Hogan (1-0) was stellar on the mound with 5.0 innings pitched and just five hits allowed. Jack McKay, Sam Boswell, Max Chou and Sam MacGregor combined to keep the Maroons lead intact into the eighth. Hayden Brotz shut the door from there and picked up his first save of the season with 1.2 scoreless innings.
UChicago gets back to conference play and takes on Ripon at home tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT.
