Box Score 2 WHEATON, Ill. – University of Chicago's baseball program split its non-conference doubleheader at Wheaton College on Saturday.
The Maroons won the opening contest 7-6 before falling 10-3 in game two.
Game One
The Maroons scored first with two RBI in the top of the first inning, but Wheaton answered with three to go ahead 3-2. UChicago's bats then responded by pushing across runs in the fourth, sixth, seventh and eight innings to build a comfortable three-run margin.
Phil Hogan preserved the win in the ninth with a save after the Thunder scored three ninth innings runs. Ethan Docter (2-0) was determined as the pitcher of record, throwing 3.2 scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Hayden Brotz started and scattered three hits and struck out four in 3.0 innings.
Offensively, eight Maroons had hits led by Brady Miller and Jonathan Zeevi, who each went 3-for-5. Jackson Slipock also had a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 with two walks. In total, UChicago had four doubles, one each from Jack Sharp, Miller, Slipock and Zeevi.
Game Two
Wheaton scored six in the first two frames, but UChicago responded with three in the top of the fourth on a three-run Devan Johnson homer to pull within three. The Thunder shut down the Maroon offense from there and tacked on four more in their final two at-bats to salvage the split.
Johnson was the bright spot offensively for UChicago with a 3-for-4 day, which included the three-run homer. Edmund Hogan (1-1) suffered the loss, pitching 3.0 innings and allowing six runs, five earned. Erik Rindner and Richard Lu added the other two hits for the Maroons.
UChicago gets back to its MWC slate on Tuesday, May 2 with a single game at Grinnell at 11 a.m. CT.
