Box Score CHICAGO – University of Chicago's baseball program defeated Illinois College 4-1 at home in Midwest Conference (MWC) play on Friday afternoon, taking the first of a three-game weekend series at J. Kyle Anderson Field.
Drew Bryan (3-2) delivered a stellar performance on the mound with a career-high 15 strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Bryan allowed just one hit and one earned run before John Butka (S,1) came in to slam the door shut with 2.2 scoreless innings. The combination of Bryan and Butka surrendered just three combined hits in the game.
UChicago pushed across two in the bottom of the third as Braden Jirovec scored on an errant Illinois College throw. Jack Goldstein then delivered a sacrifice fly to put the Maroons up two.
Richard Lu delivered a big hit with runners on second and third in the eighth, plating two to increase the Maroons' lead to three. Blane Soper and Jonathan Zeevi each had a team-high two hits.
UChicago and Illinois College will complete their three-game MWC series with a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, April 8 at noon.
