ST PETER, Minn. – University of Chicago's ninth-ranked men's tennis program closed out its 2023 season with a 5-4 loss to Gustavus Adolphus in the third round of the NCAA Tennis Championships on Sunday.
The Maroons trailed 2-1 after the doubles competition and could not complete the furious comeback, falling in 3-of-6 singles matches. UChicago finishes its 2023 campaign with a 16-6 record.
Sachin Das and Arjun Asokumar, at No. 3 doubles notched the Maroons' victory in doubles, outlasting their opponents 8-7. In singles, Das pulled UChicago even with GAC at No. 4 singles, winning 6-2, 6-1. After Gustavus secured a win at No. 6 singles, Emil Grantcharov finished off his opponent at No. 3, 7-5, 6-2, to make the match score, 3-3.
Shortly after, GAC notched a win at No. 2 singles to go back in front. Pat Otero's 7-5, 7-6 win at No. 5 singles continued the back-and-forth nature of the contest, making it 4-all. Down to the final matchup of the day, Gustavus was able to claim a three-set victory at No. 1 singles to clinch the match and advance to the NCAA quarterfinals.
