Maroons Defeat Rochester in Wild Finish

CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago scored in the final minute of regulation and in the second minute of overtime en route to a 3-2 win over the University of Rochester in University Athletic Association men's soccer action Sunday at Stagg Field.

Freshman midfielder Michael Choquette (Springfield, Mass./ Loomis Chaffee) sent a corner kick into the far right corner of the net with :57 left in regulation to send the game into overtime.

Just 1:11 into the extra session, senior midfielder Stanton Coville (Powell, Ohio/ Olentangy Liberty) sent a ball ahead to freshman forward Kyle Kurfirst (Western Springs, Ill./ Lyons), who scored the game-winner (play pictured above).

Jakob Seidlitz and Shane Dobles scored for Rochester as it dominated the first half. Chicago then held the Yellowjackets without a shot in the second half and overtime.

Freshman forward Nic Lopez (Tulsa, Okla./ Cascia Hall) scored the Maroons' first goal in the 59th minute off an assist from Choquette.

Notes and Numbers

Chicago completed a weekend sweep of regionally-ranked opponents with Sunday's win over Rochester (East Region #6). The Maroons defeated Case Western Reserve University (Great Lakes #5) 1-0 on Friday.

Kurfirst's goal was his third of the season -- all game winners -- and his second winning goal in the past two Sundays. He scored the only goal of the match in last week's 1-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Lopez scored his first career goal and became the fourth freshman to tally for the Maroons in 2011.

Sunday's game marked the sixth time in the past nine years that the Chicago/Rochester match extended into overtime.

The Maroons won their fourth in a row at Stagg Field, where they are 5-1-1 on the year.
