Box Score CHICAGO -- Sophomore forward Natalia Jovanovic (Gurnee, Ill./ Warren) assisted on the game's first goal and added an insurance goal in the closing minutes as the 20th-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team shut out Kalamazoo College 2-0 in the season opener for both teams Thursday at Stagg Field.
Following a scoreless first half in which Chicago notched a 6-2 edge in shots, the Maroons got on the board in the 56th minute. Jovanovic fed a cross to junior midfielder Brigette Kragie (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton-Warrenville South), who fired a shot past Hornet netminder Courtney McCoy.
The score remained 1-0 until the 87th minute when Jovanovic scored from eight yards out off an assist from freshman forward Meghan Derken (Madison, Conn./ Hand).
Senior goalkeeper Emma Gormley (Carmel, Ind./ Carmel) made four saves as Chicago posted its seventh straight shutout dating back to last season. The Maroons have held opponents scoreless for 748 minutes since Oct. 17, 2010.
En route to extending their opening day unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1), the Maroons outshot Kalamazoo 16-5.
Chicago returns to action at home Sunday when it takes on Dominican University at 1 p.m.
