Maroons women's basketball loses to #4-Wisconsin-Whitewater 90-76

Box Score

CHICAGO, Ill. – An aggressive University of Wisconsin-Whitewater offense and 28 turnovers were too much to overcome as the University of Chicago women's basketball team lost 90-76 on Tuesday.

The Maroons dropped to 2-1 and the No. 4-ranked Warhawks improved to 3-0.

Over the first 12 minutes of the game, UChicago was the sharper team. The Maroons navigated UWW's full-court press and senior guard Julie Muguira gave the home team a 10-7 lead by nailing a three-pointer following a press break. Both teams played at a break-neck pace in an effort to get to the lane for layups. UChicago made just over half its shots while the Warhawks struggled to finish at the rim and on jumpers, shooting 33 percent through the opening 11 minutes.

The Maroons took a 25-20 lead, with eight points coming from junior guard Claire Devaney and seven points from senior guard Maggie Ely. However, the Warhawks scored the next seven points to take the lead. The fast play led to numerous UChicago turnovers and UWW capitalized in transition. The visitors went into halftime with a 39-35 lead.

The home team turned the ball over 16 times in the first half. Muguira led all scorers with 12 points at the break.

A layup by Devaney tied the score at 39-39 early in the second half. UWW responded by embarking on a 16-4 run over the next five minutes, with 10 points coming on layups. The Warhawks imposed their will offensively, driving baseline with their guards at every opportunity.

UChicago got back into the game with five points coming in one possession. With 12:09 left, Ely scored on a layup and was fouled for a three-point play. UWW was then whistled for a technical foul and Muguira sank two free throws. Two possessions later, Muguira canned another three-pointer to draw the Maroons to within 58-54.

However, the home team could get no closer as UWW kept making shots and slowly extended the lead back to double digits. The Warhawks ended up forcing 28 turnovers and converted them into 30 points. UChicago led the rebounding category 45-40.
