KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The University of Chicago women's tennis team lost to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5-1 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Championship on Monday.
The No. 8-ranked Maroons finished the season with an 18-6 record after reaching the NCAA Quarterfinals for the fifth year in-a-row. The No. 2-ranked Athenas improved to 30-0 and advanced to the semifinals.
The duo of Sruthi Ramaswami and Maggie Schumann picked up UChicago's lone win at No. 3 doubles by an 8-5 score.
"I thought we competed really well today," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "We definitely had a good year and we were happy to be back in the Elite Eight. We have a young team that will learn and grow from this postseason experience. With that said, we are really going to miss Linden Li's leadership, both on and off the court."
Monday marked the final matches of senior Linden Li's collegiate career. She earned All-UAA recognition in all four years and compiled career marks of 68-24 in singles action and 82-26 in doubles play. Li helped spur the Maroons to a second-place finish, a pair of fourth-place finishes and a quarterfinal appearance at the NCAA Championships.
"It was definitely a bittersweet way to end the season and my career," Li said. "The team has grown so close, and we would have liked to move on, but it was still a very successful year. I feel very confident about the future of the team. It's a young and talented group that will keep getting better as time goes on. Being the only senior was a great, unique experience, and I'm really happy with my four years of memories and experiences in the program. As an alumna, I will continue to cheer them on."
