CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago volleyball team lost its first two matches of the weekend as hosts of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #2 on Saturday. The Maroons dropped to 19-10 on the season, with a 3-2 mark in the UAA.

Carnegie Mellon 3, UChicago 2 (16-25, 25-12, 25-23, 17-25, 15-13)

The home team looked sharp in the first set, jumping out to leads of 10-5 and 20-10 en route to a 25-16 win. CMU answered right back in the second set with a number of tricky serves that put the Maroons off balance. The Tartans went up by double digits and cruised to a 25-12 win to knot up the match.

The momentum carried over to the third set. CMU went ahead 15-6 midway through. UChicago came charging back hard with an 11-4 run late in the set to draw within 23-22. However, the visitors held at the end to win 25-23.

The script flipped again in the fourth set with a 10-2 run midway through by the Maroons, who forced a fifth set, 25-23. A back-and-forth final set was tied at 12-12 when Carnegie Mellon came up with several big plays to win the match 15-13.

Both teams excelled on serve and struggled mightily on receptions. UChicago posted 14 aces and CMU tallied nine aces. The Maroons hit for a .126 percentage (55 kills, 30 errors, 149 attempts) with five blocks. The Tartans hit for a .197 percentage (45 kills, 18 errors, 137 attempts) with nine blocks.

Case Western Reserve 3, UChicago 1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 25-14)

Case grabbed control early in the opening set with a 9-3 lead. UChicago quickly rallied to tie the match at 13-13 and the proceedings stayed close from there. The Spartans inched ahead at 20-18 and took the 1-0 lead in the match, 25-21.

The second set played out closely as well. With Case holding a 14-13 lead, UChicago went on an 8-2 run to go up 21-16. Freshman Stephanie Sinnappan struck two kills in the final points to even the match up at 25-20.

Set number three was knotted at 12-12 and the Spartans once again made a late move to win the set 25-19. Case kept up its solid play in the fourth set, winning 10 of the final 12 points to win the match 25-14.

UChicago committed nine service errors in the match while hitting for a .199 percentage (55 kills, 21 errors, 171 attempts). Case posted a .283 percentage (55 kills, 12 errors, 152 attempts) in the contest.

Over the course of the two matches, outside hitters Morgan Barry and Maren Loe combined for 67 of the team's 110 kills. Setter Ragine Graves handed out 84 combined assists and libero Mary Claire Tuohy collected 40 digs.
