Box Score KENOSHA, Wis. – A sizable rebounding disparity contributed to the University of Chicago women's basketball team's 67-55 loss at Carthage College on Sunday.
The Maroons dropped to 1-3 while the Lady Reds improved their record to 3-2.
Three missed shots and three turnovers put UChicago in an early hole 7-0 at the start of the game. Back-to-back three-pointers from senior forward Claire Devaney and freshman guard Elizabeth Nye, along with a steal and layup from junior guard Caitlin Moore, helped the Maroons tie the game at 10-10. Devaney followed up with another trey to put the team up 13-10.
However, Carthage used a 12-0 run to get ahead 28-16. The Lady Reds expanded the advantage to 39-22 at halftime. The Maroons struggled on offense, shooting 30.8 percent from the field. Much of their offensive contribution came from Devaney, who scored eight points in six minutes before departing with foul trouble. Nye was the leading scorer at the half with a trio of treys for nine points.
Three-pointers got the Maroons right back into the mix in the second half. UChicago hit from beyond the arc five times to draw within 44-41. But an 11-2 run put the Lady Reds back in control and kept the Maroons at bay.
Carthage controlled the boards throughout and led the category 48-28. UChicago was held to three offensive rebounds and the Lady Reds led second-chance points 15-0 in the game. Twelve of UChicago's 19 field goals came on three-pointers. Carthage had 15 turnovers to 14 by the Maroons.
