Box Score

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The University of Chicago women's basketball team avenged its Jan. 17 loss by bombing away from long range in the second half to secure a 73-57 win at No. 21-ranked New York University on Friday.

The Maroons (13-8 overall, 7-3 UAA) ran their win streak to four games and have won seven of their last eight. The Violets dropped to 18-3 overall, 7-2 in conference.

UChicago opened the game by making three of its first four shots, including a pair of three-pointers by senior guard Julie Muguira and junior guard Morgan Donovan, to lead 8-6. Both teams shot well from distance in the opening seven minutes, combining to hit 6 of 13 shots from beyond the arc. Maroons freshman guard Stephanie Anderson blocked a shot and came down the court to hit a jumper to go up 15-13. After a NYU three, Anderson answered with a trey of her own at 18-16.

Two layups put the Maroons ahead 22-16 and the two teams struggled through the next few minutes with a rash of turnovers. The Violets tied the game at 24-24, but UChicago surged forward again thanks to back-to-back threes by Donovan and sophomore guard Paige Womack at 32-26.

The two teams headed into halftime with the Maroons leading 33-30. UChicago made 40 percent of its field goals compared to 37 percent by NYU. The visitors held sway on the boards 21-15 and were led by Anderson's seven points. Donovan added six points.

Once the second half commenced, the hosts asserted themselves and grabbed the lead 37-36. However, the Maroons answered back with a flurry of long-range bombs that buried the Violets. UChicago hit six treys during a huge 29-9 run over the next nine minutes. Two-straight threes by Anderson and junior forward Ellie Greiner pushed the lead to 52-44. A layup and foul led to a three-point play by Devaney and Nordstrom stepped outside for a three to make it 65-46.

The action slowed down over the final minutes of the game and UChicago cruised for the double-digit victory. The Maroons finished with a season-high 13 three-pointers on the night (44.8 percent), which is the seventh time this year that they've reached double figures in that category.
