GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The University of Chicago women's tennis team won four of six singles matches to narrowly beat DePauw University 5-4 in the first round of the 2014 Division III National Women's Team Indoor Championship on Friday.
The Maroons (4-1) came in as the No. 2 seed in the eight-team field. The Tigers (5-1) came in as the No. 7 seed and served as hosts. UChicago will next take on No. 3-seed Carnegie Mellon University in the semifinals on Saturday.
DePauw took the early 2-1 lead after doubles action. All three matches were tightly contested and finished with a margin of two or less. Junior Megan Tang and sophomore Helen Sdvizhkov earned the 9-7 victory at No. 1 doubles.
The score was even at 3-3 with three matches to go. But it was sophomore Sruthi Ramaswami who captured the deciding match, winning at No. 5 singles by a score of 6-3, 6-1. UChicago's other victories in singles came courtesy of Tang at No. 1, freshman Tiffany Chen at No. 3 and junior Kelsey McGillis at No. 4.
