Box Score NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The University of Chicago baseball team lost at North Central College 4-1 on Sunday. The Maroons fell to 9-22 and the Cardinals (22-11) topped UChicago for the second time this season.
North Central took the initial lead 1-0 in the first frame by scoring on an error. The Cardinals then posted three more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run homer and a RBI single.
UChicago was held off the scoreboard until the top of the eighth. Senior infielder Dylan Massey singled and scored two batters later on a RBI single from junior infielder Kyle Engel. The Maroons would then load the bases with one out, but the next two batters were retired to end the scoring opportunity.
The Maroons made three errors on defense and tallied eight hits offensively. Massey was 3-for-5 at the plate and now has eight hits in his last three games. Engel and senior outfielder Brett Huff both went 2-for-4.
Junior Anthony DeRenzo (2-4) was the losing pitcher, totaling 10 hits, four runs (three earned), one walk and five strikeouts in six innings. Sophomore Alex Athenson tossed two innings of relief with one hit, one walk and two strikeouts.
