CLEVELAND, Ohio – The No. 15-ranked University of Chicago volleyball team lost a pair of conference matches to Case Western Reserve University and Carnegie Mellon University at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #2 on Saturday.

The Maroons fell to 14-7 overall and 2-3 in the UAA. The Spartans improved to 20-4 overall (4-1 UAA) and the Tartans moved to 21-4 overall (3-2 UAA).

Case Western Reserve 3, UChicago 0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-22)

UChicago looked to be in control in the early stages, building a 7-2 advantage. However, Case righted itself and won 10 of the next 14 points. The Maroons were up 17-15 when the hosts surged ahead with six-straight points to go up 21-17. Four more attack errors from there cinched the first set for the Spartans, 25-19. UChicago's offense struggled mightily with eight kills and 12 errors.

After the Maroons jumped ahead initially 5-2, the two sides found themselves tied at 11-11. But a 7-2 run midway through the set by the Spartans opened up a lead they would not relinquish, earning a 25-17 win.

Down 13-7 in the third set, UChicago got three kills from senior outside hitter Jasmine Mobley to help tie the score at 15-15. Case inched ahead 23-22 and finished off the match with two kills on the outside, 25-22.

UChicago was held to its second-lowest hitting percentage of the season at .072 (31 kills, 21 errors, 139 attempts). The Maroons served up six aces and tallied five blocks and 62 digs. Mobley led the attack with 15 kills and junior libero Mary Claire Tuohy put together a team-high 17 digs and three aces. Senior setter Ragine Graves ended up with 26 assists and 10 digs.

Case hit for a .220 percentage (45-16-132) with four service aces, six blocks and 79 digs.

Carnegie Mellon 3, UChicago 1 (25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 25-10)

The Tartans went out ahead 14-7 to start the match, but the Maroons countered with a 10-2 run that featured three service aces. Down 21-19, Carnegie Mellon made its move with four-straight kills and went on to take the set, 25-23.

The second set played out evenly. The score was tied 16-16 but CMU pulled away again down the back stretch, going up two sets at 25-22.

UChicago displayed the closing touch in the third set. Tied at 20-20, three kills and two CMU attacking errors helped the Maroons cut into the deficit, 25-21. But the fourth set was all Tartans, who closed the match on a 16-3 run to come away with the victory, 25-10.

Mobley and freshman outside hitter Audrey Scrafford scored 15 kills apiece. Freshman middle blocker Sydney Majors scored seven kills on 14 attempts and piled up five blocks. Junior setter Erin Risk dished out 19 assists. Tuohy recorded 27 digs on defense.

Overall, UChicago hit .180 (52-21-172) with six aces, five blocks and 78 digs. Carnegie Mellon ended with a .262 hitting percentage (61-18-164) with six aces, six blocks and 91 digs.
