Maroon men's soccer outlasted by Carnegie Mellon 1-0

Box Score

CHICAGO – Despite dominating the afternoon's possession and shot totals, the University of Chicago men's soccer team fell to Carnegie Mellon University 1-0 in Hyde Park on Sunday.

The loss dropped the Maroons to 10-5-2 overall (2-3-1 in the University Athletic Association), while the decision improved the Tartans to 11-2-3 (3-1-2 UAA).

UChicago ended up outshooting Carnegie Mellon 13-2 in the match, including 6-1 in the shots on goal category. Senior midfielder Jorge Bilbao led the Maroons with five shots, creating opportunities throughout the game during the run of play and on set pieces. Freshman midfielder Max Lopez, freshman forward Matthew Koh and junior forward Brenton Desai all recorded two shots apiece.

The game's lone goal came in the ninth minute off a Carnegie Mellon corner kick. Philip Petrakian whipped a low, hard service across the goal face, connecting with Zack Masciopinto who flicked the ball with his head for his fourth goal of the campaign.

Shortly after the visitor's tally, the Maroon's earned a corner of their own. Receiving the corner from Bilbao, the Maroon header sailed high of the crossbar. In the 27th minute, Bilbao – coming up from his midfielder spot – struck a bouncing volley for one of his two shots on goal. The Maroons went on to control a huge portion of the game's possession and dominated the flow.

Right out of halftime in the 48th minute, Desai used his head off of a well-played set piece, however, the Tartan goalie made a critical sprawling one-handed save. UChicago's final shot on goal came in the 77th minute when Koh used his footwork to find an angle as he fell to the ground.

Besides the shot totals, the Maroons also led in corner kicks 7-5 in a rugged, physical contest. Sophomore goalkeeper Hill Bonin took the loss to fall to 9-5-2 on the season.
